1. I began the day by prepping the glareshield covering for what I considered to be a high-stress task--gluing it in place. As it happens, I am lucky to have one of the area's foremost aircraft interior installers, Lorraine, right here on my field, so I asked her over for a consultation. It ended up that she did the actual application of contact cement and laying the leather down, which made the job fast and easy!
2. My fiend Jim and I installed the one remaining ClickBond nutplate inside the aft fuselage--replacing the one that popped off a while back due to (I think) my insufficient surface prep). This time, I scrubbed the area around the inside of the hole with Scotchbrite, then used the ClickBond chemical wipes to clean the area really well, then installed the nutplate with a fairly fresh batch of adhesive. (All of the above was, of course, performed using a reaching tool inserted through a lightening hole in the aft fuselage bulkhead. Hopefully, the second time will be the winner.
3. The big job of the day was to install the elevators My friend Jim and I pulled the needed hardware from stock, then sat down and began connecting the elevators with the required hardware. I had to add three 1/4" washers on each side of the center bearing, in addition to the bearing washer, so that was a nice challenge (made easier by my beloved Avery washer clamps). We only had a few hiccups, but overall it went well, and we got a first look at the nice camo lines.
4. Since the battery will be installed on its side, fairly near the oil cooler, I want to keep the battery as protected as possible from heat. Therefore I added a layer of heat-reflective tape to the bottom of the battery (which will actually be quite exposed to the engine compartment air. I had previously added the tape to the outside of the battery box, which had 2-1/2" lightening holes in it. This exposed circles of sticky adhesive to the battery, so today I cut appropriate circles of heat tape and stuck them to the exposed backside of the earlier tape.
5. Applied Teflon anti-rub tape to the underside of the wing skins, where the flaps will contact them.
6. Enlarged the hole in the aft baggage floor to accommodate a large rubber grommet to protect the smoke oil line and smoke pump power wires that will protrude up through the floor.
